Two Mothers Remembered

 🕊️ Two Mothers Remembered

By Joann Snow Duncanson

📖 Full Poem with Line-by-Line Translation & Analysis

Two Mothers Remembered

1. I had two Mothers, two Mothers I claim

Analysis:

🔹 English: The poet says she feels like she had two mothers — both important in her life.

2. Two different people, yet with the same name.

Analysis:

🔹 English: Both mothers are the same person but at different stages of life.

3. Two separate women, diverse by design,

Analysis:

🔹 English: The poet’s mother seemed like two different women because of aging and mental change.

4. But I loved them both because they were mine.

Analysis:

🔹 English: Despite the changes, love remained constant.

5. The first was the Mother who carried me here,

Analysis:

🔹 English: The poet remembers her biological mother.

6. Gave birth and nurtured and launched my career.

Analysis:

🔹 English: This mother cared for her child and helped her grow.

7. She was the one whose features I bear,

Analysis:

🔹 English: The daughter physically resembles her mother.

8. Complete with the facial expressions I wear.

Analysis:

🔹 English: Even her expressions and gestures are like her mother’s.

9. She gave me her love, which follows me yet,

Analysis:

🔹 English: Her love remains with the poet even now.

10. Along with the examples in life she set.

Analysis:

🔹 English: The mother’s values and lessons guide her child.

11. As I got older, she somehow younger grew,

Analysis:

🔹 English: With time, the mother started losing her mental sharpness — like a child again.

12. And we’d laugh as just Mothers and daughters do.

Analysis:

🔹 English: They shared joyful, loving moments together.

13. But then came the time that her mind clouded so,

Analysis:

🔹 English: The mother’s mind began to fade — perhaps due to old age or dementia.

14. And I sensed that the Mother I knew would soon go.

Analysis:

🔹 English: The poet realizes she is slowly losing the mother she once knew.

15. So quickly she changed and turned into the other,

Analysis:

🔹 English: Her personality changed — she became someone unrecognizable.

16. A stranger who dressed in the clothes of my Mother.

Analysis:

🔹 English: The daughter feels her mother’s body is there, but her mind is gone.

17. Oh, she looked the same, at least at arm’s length,

Analysis:

🔹 English: Physically she’s the same, but mentally she’s different.

18. But now she was the child and I was her strength.

Analysis:

🔹 English: The roles have reversed — the daughter becomes the caretaker.

19. We’d come full circle, we women three,

Analysis:

🔹 English: The poet, her first mother, and her second (changed) mother — all are parts of the life circle.

20. My mother the first, the second, and me.

Analysis:

🔹 English: The poet identifies the stages — her original mother, her changed mother, and herself.

21. And if my own children should come to a day,

Analysis:

🔹 English: The poet looks ahead — to her children’s future.

22. When a new Mother comes and the old goes away,

Analysis:

🔹 English: Refers to when she too may grow old and change.

23. I’d ask of them nothing that I didn’t do.

Analysis:

🔹 English: She doesn’t expect more from her children than what she did for her own mother.

24. Love both of your Mothers as both have loved you.

Analysis:

🔹 English: The poem ends with a touching message — love and accept your mother in all her stages of life.

The poem “Two Mothers Remembered” describes a daughter’s emotional journey as she watches her mother grow old and change due to illness or memory loss.

At first, the mother was strong, caring, and guiding. Later, she became weak and dependent — like a child.

The poet realizes that she has had “two mothers” — one before the illness and one after.

👉 She loves both equally.

And she wishes that her own children will do the same when she grows old someday.

🌹 Main Theme & Central Idea

Love & Care:

Circle of Life:

💖 Summary

This poem shows that life goes in a circle —

A mother once cared for her child, and later that child becomes the caregiver.

No matter how time changes, love never fades.

We must love our mothers — in every form, every stage of life. ❤️

‘Two incredible shoes.
Two incredible shoes.
That’s The News.
When it rains
they walk down drains.
They glow
in the snow.
They grizzle
in a drizzle.
They sneeze
in a breeze.
They get warm
in a storm.
They go soggy
when it’s foggy.
They’ve even hissed
in a mist.
But
(sad to say)
there came a terrible frost.
This is what happened:
they got lost.’
That was The News.

🔹 Full Poem: Solitude by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone;
For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.
Sing, and the hills will answer;
Sigh, it is lost on the air;
The echoes bound to a joyful sound,
But shrink from voicing care.

Rejoice, and men will seek you;
Grieve, and they turn and go;
They want full measure of all your pleasure,
But they do not need your woe.
Be glad, and your friends are many;
Be sad, and you lose them all;
There are none to decline your nectar’d wine,
But alone you must drink life’s gall.

Feast, and your halls are crowded;
Fast, and the world goes by.
Succeed and give, and it helps you live,
But no man can help you die.
There is room in the halls of pleasure
For a long and lordly train,
But one by one we must all file on
Through the narrow aisles of pain.

Contemplation by John Carpenter

For days and days I’ve climbed a tree
A dappled yellow tree
And gazed abroad at many things
I’ve always wished to see.

I see the green and gentle fields
All bounded in with hedge
And shining rivers swimming through
The rushes on the edge,
And little sheep who play all day
I watch them as they run,
While far away the roofs of town
Are shining in the sun.

I think it’s very nice to sit
So high and look so far ----
How very large the world can be!
How many things there are!

Time You Old Gypsy Man by Ralph Hodgson

Time You Old Gypsy Man by Ralph Hodgson

Will you not stay,
Put up your caravan
Just for one day?

All things I'll give you
Will you be my guest,
Bells for your jennet
Of silver the best,
Goldsmiths shall beat you
A great golden ring,

Peacocks shall bow to you,
Little boys sing.
Oh, and sweet girls will
Festoon you with may,
Time, you old gypsy,
Why hasten away?

Last week in Babylon,
Last night in Rome,
Morning, and in the crush
Under Paul's dome;
Under Pauls' dial
You tighten your rein -
Only a moment,

And off once again;
Off to some city
Now blind in the womb,
Off to another
Ere that's in the tomb.

Time, you old gypsy man,
Will you not stay,
Put up your caravan
Just for one day?
