What are Linking Words/Connectors?

Linking words (also called connectors, conjunctions, or transition words) are used to connect words, phrases, or sentences, helping to maintain logical flow in writing. They improve coherence and make writing more structured.

Types of Linking Words & Their Rules with Examples


1. Addition (āϝোāĻ— āĻŦা āϏংāϝোāϜāύ āĻŦোāĻাāϤে)

Rule: Used to add more information to a sentence.

🔹 Common Words: And, Also, Moreover, Furthermore, Besides, In addition, Not only... but also

Examples:

  • He is talented and hardworking. (āϏে āĻĒ্āϰāϤিāĻ­াāĻŦাāύ āĻāĻŦং āĻĒāϰিāĻļ্āϰāĻŽী।)
  • I like tea. Moreover, I enjoy coffee. (āφāĻŽি āϚা āĻĒāĻ›āύ্āĻĻ āĻ•āϰি। āĻ…āϧিāĻ•āύ্āϤু, āφāĻŽি āĻ•āĻĢিāĻ“ āωāĻĒāĻ­োāĻ— āĻ•āϰি।)

2. Contrast/Opposition (āĻŦিāϰোāϧ āĻŦা āĻŦিāĻĒāϰীāϤ āĻ­াāĻŦ āĻĒ্āϰāĻ•াāĻļে)

Rule: Used to show contrast or opposite ideas.

🔹 Common Words: But, However, Yet, On the other hand, Whereas, While, Although, Though, Nevertheless

Examples:

  • He is poor, but he is happy. (āϏে āĻĻāϰিāĻĻ্āϰ, āĻ•িāύ্āϤু āϏে āϏুāĻ–ী।)
  • She studied hard; however, she failed. (āϏে āĻ•āĻ োāϰ āĻĒāĻĄ়াāĻļোāύা āĻ•āϰেāĻ›িāϞ; āϤāĻŦে āϏে āĻŦ্āϝāϰ্āĻĨ āĻšāϝ়েāĻ›ে।)

Rule: Used to show the reason or result of an action.

🔹 Common Words: Because, Since, As, So, Therefore, Thus, Hence, As a result, Consequently

Examples:

  • He failed because he did not study. (āϏে āĻŦ্āϝāϰ্āĻĨ āĻšāϝ়েāĻ›ে āĻ•াāϰāĻŖ āϏে āĻĒāĻĄ়াāĻļোāύা āĻ•āϰেāύি।)

4. Comparison (āϤুāϞāύা āĻŦোāĻাāϤে)

Rule: Used to compare two or more things.

🔹 Common Words: Like, Similarly, Likewise, Just as, In the same way, As...as

Examples:

  • She sings like a professional. (āϏে āĻāĻ•āϜāύ āĻĒেāĻļাāĻĻাāϰেāϰ āĻŽāϤো āĻ—াāύ āĻ—াāϝ়।)

Examples:

Rule: Used to indicate time relations between actions.

🔹 Common Words: Before, After, While, When, As soon as, Until, Since

Examples:

  • Before you go out, take an umbrella. (āϤুāĻŽি āĻŦেāϰ āĻšāĻ“āϝ়াāϰ āφāĻ—ে āĻ›াāϤা āύাāĻ“।)

Rule: Used to introduce conditions for an action.

🔹 Common Words: If, Unless, Provided that, As long as, Otherwise

Examples:

  • If you study, you will pass. (āϝāĻĻি āϤুāĻŽি āĻĒāĻĄ়ো, āϤাāĻšāϞে āϤুāĻŽি āĻĒাāĻļ āĻ•āϰāĻŦে।)

Rule: Used to highlight a point strongly.

🔹 Common Words: Indeed, In fact, Undoubtedly, Obviously, Surely, Particularly

Examples:

Rule: Used to summarize or conclude an idea.

🔹 Common Words: In conclusion, To sum up, In short, All in all, Finally, Lastly, Therefore, Thus

Examples:
